Gamate Intrafallopian Transfer in Infertile Patients with Endometriosis

Abstract
The purpose of this retrospective study was to investigate whether there was any correlation between the presence or the severity of endometriosis and the results obtained with GWI performed as a treatment modality by comparison with the results in unexplained infertility.
GIFT with or without in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer(IVF-ET) was performed on women with endometriosis(39 women,40 cycles, group II) or unexplained infertility(45 women, 55 cycles, groupI).
There was no significant difference in age(mean¡¾ SD : 32.1¡¾ 3.2 years vs 33.1¡¾ 32 years),and duration of infertility(6.1¡¾ 33 years vs 52¡¾ 21 years) between two groups. The rates of cycles with simultaneous IVF-ET, with cryopreservation and with total unfertilization were not also different in both groups. The numbers of oocytes retrieved(12.1¡¾ 5.8 vs 11.7¡¾ 5:1), oocytes transferred in GIFT(4.6¡¾ 0.6 vs 4.8¡¾ 0.8), and embryos transferred in IVF-ET(3.5¡¾ 1.6 vs 3.5¡¾1. 5) were not affected by the presence of endometriosis. The Pregnancy rate per cycle were similar in both groups(36.4% vs 39.1%). The severity of endometriosis was not associated with the pregnancy rate(stage I and II vs stage Ill and N ; 38.5% vs 42-9%). These data suggest that the presence or the severity of endometriosis may not inhibit the follicular development, the fertilization, of oocytes or the implantation of embryos, and affect the results of GIFT or IVF-ET. Therefore, GIFT with TVF-ET is an effective treatment modality with relatively low risk for the infertile patients with endometriosis.
